Direct Demcracy - A La Cameron

Paul Waugh homes in on the latest idea of David Cameron for petitions to influence parliament, which on the face of it presents an acceptable option to our democracy.

Were he to be elected, what is the odds on a 'David Cameron Must Resign' petition getting the required 1 million signatures, meaning it would need a Bill to be tabled and debated. What irony!

    Exactly WFW, I've argued on my blog that this is nothing more than empty nonsense. The potential for Cameron to become unstuck on a number of issues is enormous - he won't allow it.

    I wonder how long it is before the proposal is quietly dropped.

    I don't have have a transcript in front of me, but I believe the wording was on the lines of petitions "will be eligible" and that they would be "entitled" to being tabled.

    Doesn't mean they're going anywhere. Plenty of procedural crevices they can be quietly dropped into and forgotten.

    Quite correct sir and yes, I had spotted that. Yet another meaningless promise and he hopes no-one will notice the choice of words!
