Artistic Licence

At the start of each country's rotating presidency of the European Union it is customary for that country to have an exhibit placed at the EU's headquarters. From Mr. Eugenides I have found this article in the International Herald Tribune.

When some of Europe's artists were asked to portray their countries and how they see the European Union, organizers hoped for a provocative exhibition. But the results - due to be unveiled Monday - may have officials choking on their morning croissants.

The Czechs have surpassed themselves by producing a satirical exhibit showing Bulgaria as one giant lavatory, France having gone on strike and Spain's construction industry having concreted the entire country.

The exhibit is in the form the form of a giant child's model kit, the pieces of which are broken off from a plastic frame before being assembled. The 27 EU nations are each represented by a piece in their shape.

In what must be the 'satirical' statement of the year, Britain's legendary detachment from the project of European integration is illustrated by Khalid Asadi, who has left the space reserved for the United Kingdom empty.

Don't you just love it?
