Writing in the Telegraph today, James Kirkup, Political Correspondent, reports on David Cameron's 'pronouncements' on which I commented briefly yesterday.
Some further comments:
David Cameron states "Our politics being dragged through the mud is not just bad for the House of Commons, it's bad for the country." It is not just this question of allowances and expenses that is 'bad for the country' Mr. Cameron, it is the whole question of democracy in this country and the manner in which it is conducted that is 'bad for the country'. It is our membership of the European Union, the lack of true 'local democracy' and the practice of MPs supporting the 'party line' in Parliament, rather than the wishes of their constituents.
David Cameron states "Frankly I don't mind which one we go for. I just want us to sort it out." Who gave you, Mr. Cameron, the 'God given right' to decide the manner of your remuneration?
How about the views of the electorate, who are after all your paymasters?
The article goes on to state that 'MPs are now paid a salary of £64,766. Many claim that their pay has failed to keep pace with that of comparable professionals and privately say they will only give up their allowances in exchange for a big salary increase.' If MPs feel their pay has failed to keep pace with that of comparable professionals, it might help if they could actually show they have earned it! This last point is highlighted by the fact that MPs are only responsible for approximately 25 percent of the laws by which we are governed.
In this country today 'democracy', per se, is non-existent!
