Pause For Thought

An extract from an 'off the cuff' speech given by Roger Meekins, UKIP candidate for Farnham, Godalming and Hazlemere a few weeks ago, with the addition of the video by me.

"Cast your minds back to the end of last year. Did you see or hear the Queen’s Christmas message this past Christmas?  By that, I mean the whole speech in its entirety rather than the somewhat edited versions that appeared on The News.  If you did, you might, like me, have been struck as much by what the Queen did not say as what she did say." (To refresh your memory, it is reproduced now - Ed).



Bearing in mind that her speech is meant to be something of a reprise of the events of 2009, it was remarkable that she did not mention a historical event that occurred that year involving the British monarchy.  For the first time in centuries, a British monarch actually signed away her sovereignty and ours, making it subjected to a superior authority.  By that, I mean the Lisbon Treaty.  Never mind all the fuss about Gordon Brown signing it; it actually came into law when the Queen signed it.  How much pressure was she put under?  Did she resist?  If so, to what degree?  In any event, she signed it.  Now you would have thought that would have, at least, got a mention in her speech,  but no,  if you listen carefully, she did not at any time mention the Lisbon Treaty, mention the word Europe, the word European, let alone the phrase European Union. 

By contrast, she did spend the lion’s share of her speech talking about the Commonwealth, the shared principles of the nations of the Commonwealth, how they all meet once a year, backed up by footage of young people from the various countries who all joined in the annual Commonwealth conference.  You see, what the Queen has to say is rigidly controlled by Gordon Brown and other governmental people.  What they cannot control is what she does not say.  So the fact that she said nothing about the European Union and the Lisbon Treaty and then went on at length about the value of the Commonwealth seems to me to be a pretty clear message.

Let me remind you of the Oath of Allegiance.  What is it we are all either presumed to have said or actually do have to say if we want to come and live here or if, for that matter, you want to be an MP.  You say ‘I do solemnly swear to bear true allegiance to her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors’, not allegiance to Gordon Brown, let alone David Cameron or to Parliament or anything else.  The allegiance we owe is to the monarch. 

Let us turn to the Queen’s Coronation Oath.  What was it she swore to do on 2nd June 1953?  The Archbishop said to her ‘Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the peoples of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and ‘then all the other Commonwealth countries’ and your possessions and other territories according to their respective laws and customs’ and the Queen said ‘I solemnly promise to do so’.  Transferring sovereignty to the European Union and doing away with the rights and liberties enshrined in Magna Carta, i.e. no more trial by jury, no more habeas corpus, no more presumption of innocence, is hardly governing us according to our respective laws and customs.  In fact it’s exactly the reverse’ so, is the Queen in default of her oath? I think she is but not willingly so.

The evils, as I perceive them, of our drift into the Orwellian nightmare of the European Union are already starting to occur.  Let me focus on two examples.  The first one, and this is absolutely top of my list of things I would do something about if I were to be elected, is the European arrest warrant.  There are fellow countrymen of ours now in prisons in Europe who have failed to be protected by the rights granted to them in Magna Carta. 

500 years later we have the American Declaration of Independence.  Now people are telling me that it’s not possible for us to get out of the European Union because we’ve signed a treaty, illegally in my view, to transfer our sovereignty to the European Union.  Let me read you what it says in the Declaration of Independence.  It says ‘When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of  mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation’.  And then it goes on to say the famous words ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal’ etc.  The history of the world is littered with broken treaties. Try telling the Americans their independence is illegal.

So - don’t tell me we can’t declare our independence from the European Union and get out.  Does the task seem impossible?  Yes it does, but remember all revolutions always were categorised as impossible before they happened and inevitable after they had happened.

It is not that there’s an army camped across the other side of the Channel waiting to invade but the danger is just as great. It is happening surreptitiously, stealthily.  They are stealing our country from us.  I have a vision that I might die, go to heaven and there be confronted by my father who will say to me ‘My generation fought a war for 6 years to prevent this country being taken over by Europe.  What did your generation do?  Nothing, you just let it all be taken away by stealth’.  I want to be able to look him in the eye and say ‘Dad, we did our best.  We really, really did do our best’.  Better still, I’d rather be able to look him in the eye and say ‘We did our best and succeeded’."

I've often listened to or read later what the Queen says in her speeches and thought 'That's odd. Why didn't she say X' and now having read this superb piece it all makes sense.

I gave up watching the Queen's Speech some time ago pretty much for the reasons you give. We have been sold out ever since Heath did the dirty deed and lied about the whole thing. And the politicians are,I'm afraid still lying about the EU, largely by omission, but lies nevertheless. As a monarchist I am worried by the Queen's position in all this. She and her family served us well during the war and we hoped she would build on that.
