"Frankly its a real 'gravy train'", according to Mike Warburton, senior tax partner at accountants Grant Thornton, when talking about the 'special' tax treatment by the Inland Revenue for MP's allowances - something which most of the British electorate had already worked out for themselves.
It would seem that the suggestion that MPs allowances and expenses could be dispensed with in return for an increase in salary has not been 'thought through' by those proposing it as such an increase would mean that the amount would be subject to taxation! Whoops!
This report adds yet another dimension to the whole matter of MPs 'special status' - in other words, why should they be treated any differently than a 'normal' working person in this country - bearing in mind that parliament is now no more than a local 'administration centre' for the implementation of directives and regulations that emanate from the European Union.
