Go Compare

Labour Party Manifestos:

2005 - European Union:

".........It is a good treaty for Britain and for the new Europe. We will put it to the British people in a referendum and campaign whole-heartedly for a ‘Yes’ vote to keep Britain a leading nation in Europe." (my emphasis)

2010 - European Union:

"On the Euro, we hold to our promise that there will be no membership of the single currency without the consent of the British people in a referendum." (my emphasis)

Not only did Labour break their 2005 manifesto pledge, but they will be breaking their 2010 manifesto pledge. Readers will not need reminding that it is stated in the Treaty on European Union (TEU) Article 3.4 "The Union shall establish an economic and monetary union whose currency will be the euro."

Remember, "at least once every two years, or at the request of a Member State with a derogation, the Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB) shall report to the Council on the progress made in the fulfilment by the Member States of their obligations regarding the achievement of economic and monetary union." (my emphasis)

Talk all you like about opt-outs - a referendum on adopting the euro is as likely as the last promised referendum!
