An interesting article in the Independent on Philip Hollobone, Conservative MP for Kettering, who is renowned for his low expense claims.
Allowing for differences in constituency size, composition etc it does beg the question why, if one MP can get by without staff and travel second class on trains, other MPs need such large expense accounts. Hollobone's allowances/expenses can be viewed here and his travel/family expenditure here.
And the reason for his low 'costs'? Simple - "It is public money and I think there is a duty on all of us to try to keep the expenses as low as possible."
