The Daily Telegraph reports that Caroline Spelman is expected to announce plans within days to dispose of about half of the 748,000 hectares of woodland overseen by the Forestry Commission by 2020.
Now, I may be suffering from a surfeit of 'Grousing' and as a result the eyesight may be suspect and my brain 'befuddled', but I do not recollect anything in the Coalition 'manifesto', the Conservative manifesto or the LibDem manifesto which stated that the electorate agreed to the desecration of our countryside. So once again Cameron, in common with his political elite colleagues, wants to ride 'roughshod' over Magna Carta!
This part of the Telegraph report is interesting:
"The Forestry Commission, whose estate was valued in the 1990s at £2.5 billion, was a quango which was initially thought to be facing the axe as ministers drew up a list of arms-length bodies to be culled. However, when the final list was published earlier this month it was officially earmarked: "Retain and substantially reform – details of reform will be set out by Defra later in the autumn as part of the Government's strategic approach to forestry in England."
This would not have anything to do with the recent EU 'survey' about areas of 'countryside' in member states, would it? Does one detect EU intervention about which we have not yet been told?
