Missing The Point (2 - I think)

Henry Porter, writing in the Guardian, draws attention to the lack of silence, on the part of David Cameron, to the question of 'rights'. Discussing the present Labour government, Porter says:

"It is also a very dangerous government – it has attacked liberty and rights like no other administration in the past hundred years, and it will continue to do so unless stopped by the electorate in 70 days' time, for the one area which requires absolutely no skill at all is the creation of new offences, the erosion of ancient liberties and filling our lives with endless checking, vetting and surveillance."

Unfortunately it is impossible to see any change to the above accusation, were the Conservatives to win the general election, because silence on any particular subject can only be taken as acceptance of the 'status quo'.

Remember people, when casting your vote at the general election, which party is prepared to grant you your freedom, freedom which has over the past decades been usurped by our political elite - and remember the quotations that follow because continuation with Lib/Lab/Con, coupled with their desire to remain within the European Union, will mean eventual enslavement.

Benjamin Franklin: "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security"

Franklin D. Roosevelt: "True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence."

H.L. Mencken: "I believe that liberty is the only genuinely valuable thing that men have invented, at least in the field of government, in a thousand years. I believe that it is better to be free than to be not free, even when the former is dangerous and the latter safe. I believe that the finest qualities of man can flourish only in free air – that progress made under the shadow of the policeman's club is false progress, and of no permanent value. I believe that any man who takes the liberty of another into his keeping is bound to become a tyrant, and that any man who yields up his liberty, in however slight the measure, is bound to become a slave."

Ronald Reagan: "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handded for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was one like to be free."

Of particular note, in respect of the European Union who actually dictates the 'rights' you have, are the words of Henry Mencken: "I believe that any man who takes the liberty of another into his keeping is bound to become a tyrant, and that any man who yields up his liberty, in however slight the measure, is bound to become a slave." Likewise, worthy of repitition are the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt "True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence."

MW, Henry is, on the whole, a fair-minded sort of journo and very much anti loss of liberty.

Yes, there is a lot of noise from supposed champions of our rights and it is a cynical exercise. Those we should be relying on are letting us down.
