More Rubbish Verbiage

From Ken Clarke, Justice Secretary, in this report from the BBC.

If it is the case that prison is not linked to a drop in crime, it’s because prison is not enough of a deterrent, not because prison in a flawed concept. If prison was as much of a punishment as it should be, rather than the occupational hazard it has become, it would help bring crime figures down. Clarke seems to be forgetting that prison has two other functions also – it keeps the criminal off the streets and away from the public and it can (if proper sentences are given) give the victim some consolation that justice has been done.

Perhaps the adoption of some of the ideas of Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County could be put to use here, when considering the rights of prisoners!
